Even we agree on  certain key concepts such as musky or clean smelling, each person has a  unique idea of what those smell like based on their own experiences.  When you introduce words like fresh or bright smelling, who knows what  that might mean to that individual, soapy, citrus, herbal, it could  easily encompass all of those concepts. I've found this chart to be a  nice place to start when describing fragrances and flavors. It works  especially well when purchasing perfume for yourself and others.
