The Scent Story

The wonders of the Industrial Age—how they must have beckoned and dazzled the Victorians. Everywhere they looked, new wonders awaited: lacy buildings of glass and steel, ornate engines churning out wondrous new products. The smell of prosperity was in the air. But what would prosperity smell like?

I imagined a Steampunk fantasy that married a traditional fougere with shiny aldehydic notes and a metal and oil accord symbolic of the Industrial Age. From recent experiments in representing forms of glass as perfume, I chose an accord that I had named Pince-Nez in reference to those minimal Victorian glasses that perch on the nose. A pair of pince-nez seemed the ideal lens through which to view the Victorian age.

The usual fougere notes of Bergamot, Lemon, and Lavender are given an aldehydic twist to make them sparkle like a glasshouse in the sunlight. Neroli and Tonka Bean Absolutes ornament the top notes adding richness and depth. The motive force driving it all forward, a metal and oil accord suffused with Oakmoss Absolute.
