Burner Perfume** No4: John Frum
The Burning Man art theme for 2013 was Cargo Cult. What a fascinating concept. In the Melanesian Islands, a cargo cult is a system of beliefs based around the expected arrival of ancestral spirits in ships bringing cargoes of food and other goods.

Picture for example the Second World War: a group of uniformed men show up on your South Pacific island with all sorts of magical cargo, providing you with amenities you never dreamed possible. They stay for a few years and then leave as abruptly as they came. As a native, you are left wondering where these people and all their cargo came from, why did they leave, and will they be coming back. Where do you get more canned food, carbonated beverages, alcohol, medicine? How do you restore life to the silent machinery? Named for the messianic figure-head of the Vanuatu Cargo Cult, John Frum is an attempt to experience directly, a little bit of Vanuatu as a place and a culture.

Researching cargo cults leads one to question who or what may be playing the role of savior in our own lives: family, government, technology? Who do we look to for succor? Or should we? Perhaps the power of transformation dwells within each one of us.

**Burning Man-Inspired Perfumes
Burning Man, a week-long event in experimental community building, is a great source of artistic joy and inspiration. Each Burning Man event has a theme which inspires a profusion of fabulous art from its participants. I create a yearly “Burner Perfume” based on these themes. The first run of every Burner Perfume is given away at Burning Man as my artistic gift to the community.
