The Scent Story

When Editor in Chief, Michelyn Camen invited me to collaborate on another anniversary perfume for her fragrance magazine Cafleurebon, I was all in. This marks my fourth contribution to the “Queen Series” of perfumes (cyBorg Queen, Vampire Queen & Snow Queen being the other three). These scents not only celebrate Cafluerebon.com as a pillar of the fragrance community, but also highlight the resilience and strength of women, since each one is inspired by some aspect of feminine fortitude. Michelyn provides the perfume brief, and every time it turns out to be a great source of inspiration. Knowing that I (like her) am a big fan of Game of Thrones, she proposed a perfume to be called Dragon Queen based on the Daenerys Targaryen character. The development of Daenerys, throughout the arc of the narrative, is really remarkable. From her beginning as timid teen to her ultimate emergence as a natural leader, we see Daenerys look deeply within herself to bring forth the inner strength and courage necessary to not only survive, but to thrive in a hostile world. Of course, it never hurts to have your own dragons.

Through the use of a very rare ingredient, Dragon’s Blood Resin, Dragon Queen perfume references not only Daenerys’s transformation but her beloved dragons. As a perfume material, Dragon’s Blood resin is almost impossible to source. Coincidentally, I had a limited amount of this precious, C02-extracted resin. I had been saving the resin for a special project and when I heard the Dragon Queen perfume brief, I knew it was the perfect vehicle for this beautiful, blood-red resin.

Dragon Queen opens with warm spices: Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Clove, and Lawang draped over Dragon’s Blood resin, Myrrh, Frankincense, and Palo Santo. Where “there be dragons” you’re going to find fire and smoke. The Dragon Accord features Oud, Leather, Musk, and soft Smoke Notes. The base is built from Balsams and Amber Notes enriched with Vanilla and Wood Notes. Woven together, these materials create a bold and beautiful perfume worthy of a queen and tamer of dragons.
