The Scent Story
I love the scent and taste of a fresh carrot plucked from the earth! The green, slightly peppery fronds, the soil that clings to the surface, the sweet flavor that seems to match the vivid color—it’s a simple but intensely gratifying encounter. As common as they are now, in ancient times, they were considered rather exotic. The Greeks called the carrot “philtron” and used it as an aphrodisiac, supposedly making men more ardent and women more yielding. The Roman emperor Caligula, believing these stories, forced the whole Roman Senate to eat carrots so he could see them “in rut like wild beasts!” Salacious stories aside, there’s a lot to experience in this humble root.
When it comes to perfume, it’s not the root but the seeds of the carrot plant that give us two beautiful materials to work with: carrot seed oil and carrot absolute. Both of these materials have a root-like, earthy quality with woody nuances. Additionally, carrot seed oil has a peppery aspect, while carrot absolute displays fruity and leathery aspects. Both of these multi-faceted materials have an affinity with another root, orris. The root of the Iris flower, orris is one of the most beautiful and costly perfumes materials, often costing more per ounce than gold. The combination of these materials is the root of 24 Carrot perfume.
24 Carrot opens with a burst of fruity orange-tinged notes from a blood orange, apricot, and davana accord. Green, peppery carrot fronds, marigolds, and hint of soil follow. A woody, slightly leathery carrot seed accord is intertwined with a rich orris accord. A hint of musk rounds out the composition.
