The Scent Story
A collaboration between Cafleurebon.com and AetherArtsPerfume.com
I was super excited to be asked by Editor in chief Michelyn Camen to create a perfume to commemorate the 13th anniversary of her fragrance magazine Cafleurebon.com. Michelyn has a way of sniffing out unique and creative themes that always result in wonderful new fragrances. I have participated in a number of collaborative projects with Cafleurebon and they never disappoint. The perfumes Touchstone and Circe were the fragrant result of two such projects. I have always found collaboration to be a richly rewarding endeavor and this project was no exception. The perfume brief was simple and well matched to my creative and aesthetic approach: create a perfume called cyBorg Queen.
Michelyn and I are both Star Trek geeks, so the Borg Queen from the series was a natural inspiration. Her cyborg body, with its amalgamation of metal, polymers and flesh, is both beautiful and monstrous. She is like a futuristic Frankenstein. But this is the view of those outside the collective; those within the hive perceive her differently. Within highly organized, collective insect communities, status is conferred by pheromones. The queen is the queen because she has queen pheromones. This special scent is wielded by only one female and it is she who rules the hive. The queen’s pheromone accord is the heart of cyBorg Queen--a sexy, indolic jasmine to attract while a rich, gourmand almond note conveys nurturing and comfort. Her body of skin, polymers, and metals wafts her signature perfume, a silent but unmistakable message of dominance but also protection.
